Furniture for tying fishing flies

Tying fishing flies requires a lot of equipment and materials.
This is a world we discovered when Patrice asked us to design a layout combining his home office with a unit for tying fishing flies and storing equipment.
The home office section features a storage column for office equipment, comprising five drawers. The two drawer units were selected from the twelve available options. Interchangeable and modular, the units consist of between two and eight drawers.

The unit’s worktop is wide enough to accommodate both screens, as well as the fly-tying vise.
This is stored at the side of the worktop when not in use.

We wanted to make the most of every inch of space. Consequently, the corner beneath the unit has been fitted with two shelves. These hold additional equipment that is used less frequently

The “Fly-tying” passion

We have fitted the back of the unit with numerous drawers to store the items needed for fly-tying.
As with any activity, being able to organise your storage and have your equipment to hand saves time.

Choosing a style
Our furniture is now available in two styles: the “Classic Auboi” with brass knobs, and the “Zen Auboi” with black knobs.

We use solid beech for the frame and MDF for the tops and drawer units, ensuring the furniture is of high quality and built to last.

Description

As we consider the layout proposal designed to optimise storage, we discover a whole range of equipment and a very specific vocabulary.

Patrice was thus able to organise his equipment into separate drawers: scissors, scalpels, spool holders, dubbing tools, hackle pliers, tying pliers, whip-finish tools and all the other "fly-tying" tools.

To ensure the fly resembles the insect (generally) it is imitating as closely as possible, a wide range of materials is required. There will be as many colours of thread – in various types of silk, nylon and other materials – as there are feathers, hairs, furs and dubbings.
There are also various types of weights – brass, lead, tungsten and so on – which will be stored in drawers.

These materials are assembled using a clamping vice. The slightly curved worktop allows you to position the work as close as possible to the clamping vice. Additional equipment, such as the large magnifying glass, is stored in the corner of the unit.

Tying fishing flies requires creativity, patience and precision, as well as great dexterity.
When we met Patrice and he introduced us to this craft, we were amazed by the delicacy of the finished pieces.

The flies are beautiful objects; some of them even look like jewellery!

Anglers say that ‘Tying flies is a bit like being out fishing’.
One thing’s for sure: tying flies is an art!
